Journey from IT Manager to CIO Session 2

The transition from technical specialist IT manager through to CIO needs a progressive change of focus.  It requires, increasingly, greater attention on the business and people side of the work as well as the role of team player in the management group and how IT supports the delivery of the organisation's value proposition.

For technical people this can be a new way of thinking.  To be successful and progress in your career it would seem that this approach should start earlier rather than later.

In the first session, CIOs shared with us their views about about the importance of understanding the business and working with the executive team.  We learned of the importance of understanding the broader issues that impact on the business and to treat IT as a business not just as a service.  Discipline is needed to stay focused and manage the  expectations of others while dealing with positive and negative situations in the workplace.
